Lavine Haripersad - Managing Director
About Lavine
Lavine Haripersad (BCom Hons) has more than 25 years' experience in Payroll Management and Payroll Accounting, for national and international companies. For the last twenty-five years she was in Group Payroll Management roles for large national Companies including Nampak.
A member of the South African Payroll Association for 11 years and Vice Chairman for three of those years, Lavine has represented SAPA as a speaker at conferences in the USA for the American Payroll Association (APA) and in the UK for the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP), and in November 2020 presented remotely at a conference for The Association for Payroll Specialists (TAPS) in Australia. From 2007 to 2018, she was a Director of SAPA leading the events portfolio. In this role, she facilitated stimulating educational events and workshops aimed at raising the level of Payroll Professionals, through equipping them with the practical and professional skills required to run effective Payroll Departments.
Lavine sees Payroll Professionals as the guardians of the payroll. The payroll can be the biggest expense of a Company and unfortunately, if things go wrong, it can end up being the single biggest risk to a Company. The payroll world evolves constantly through legislative amendments as do the practical complications arising from these. The responsibility of managing these seamlessly falls on the Payroll Professional.
Lavine thrives on the ongoing challenges that the payroll environment brings, and started PayBuddy Payroll Solution (Pty) Ltd during lockdown in 2020. If you would like to know how PayBuddy Payroll can help your organisation, get in touch with her on +27 82 881 2252 or at lavine@paybuddypayroll.co.za.
Weena Sutherland – Operations Manager
About Weena
Weena graduated from Umea University in Sweden, with a Masters Degree in Finance, majoring in Accounting.
Her career in payroll started 15 years back with her first job in South Africa when she was employed as a Temp in Nampak's Salaries Department, and it has been her passion ever since.
Weena explains why she loves payroll:
"Many people believe that payroll is about pressing a button one day before payday. What many people don't realize is that every button you press and every input you make will have an effect on the employee's salary, and the company that you are working for. To me, it is important to have an understanding and a big picture of the effect of, for example, an increase of R100 on the employee and employer and the tax man."
Although Weena loves working with figures, as she does the challenges of forever changing legislation and meeting monthly deadlines, she also enjoys the people side of the work, \"dealing with people and assisting people whenever I can by, for example, explaining to employees their tax deductions and how they are calculated."
From Lavine
"I was looking for a 'right hand man' to take care of the payroll operations. I knew that I needed a trustworthy, experienced and knowledgeable person, someone with excellent attention to detail who understood the non-negotiability of payroll deadlines, and someone whom customers found approachable and knowledgeable and who could defuse tense situations. Having worked closely with Weena Sutherland for ten years, I saw her as the ideal candidate to team up with me".
